A wise lesson for young people ?
In the supermarket a young cashier told an older woman that it is better
she take or own bag in case than she take every time a plastic bag .
Because these plastic bags are not good for the environment, she said .
The older woman apologizes and explained: we don't have that green stuff when
I was young ! The cashier replied, ” Yes, and that is exactly our
problem today , your generation did not care about saving the environment for
future generations !”
Yes, she was right, our generation doesn't have that green stuff in our days.
Then we had milk in bottles, soft drink in bottles and beer in bottles .
When there were empty and rinsed we brought they back to the store .
The shop sent it back to the factory . The factory sterilized and refilled these
bottles . We really did recycling ! But we did not have
that green stuff in those days !
We walked on stairs, because we did not have possessed escalators and elevators
in each building . We walked to the supermarket and we did not take every time
300 HP machine , every time we had to go 2 blocks. But she was quite right,
we did not have that green stuff in those days !
Baby diapers were in the boil wash, because disposable diapers did not exist .
We dried our clothes on the line and not in a power-hungry machine those
continuous used 2000-watts . Wind and solar dried our clothes really.
That was normal in our days . Children wore the cast-offs of older siblings
and wear not brand new clothes . But the young lady is right !
We had not that green stuff in those days !
At that time we had - perhaps - 1 TV or radio at home and not 1 in
every room . The TV had a small window, the size of a handkerchief
and not a screen the size of a big hive .
In the kitchen dishes were mixed and stirred by hand,
because we had no electrical devices that did everything for us .
When we had a fragile object send by post, we wrapped it in an old
newspaper to protect and not in Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap .
In those days we used no grass cutter with an engine running on petrol
or electricity . We used a mower that had to be pushed and
acted on human strength, were fit, less fat, no diabetes-2 .
We sported by working so we did not go to a gym to go to spinning
treadmills to run . So, now obesity, no diabetes epidemic, almost nothing !
But she's right . We had not that green stuff in those days !
We drank from the fountain when we were thirsty, instead of a plastic bottle,
which we discard after 30 sips . We filled our pens with ink, in place
to buy each time a new pen . We replaced the blades of the razor,
instead of throw the whole thing away just because the blade was bone . But we had not that green stuff in our time .
People took the train or a bus and children walked or biked to
school instead of use their mother as a 24-hour taxi service .
We had 1 socket in each room and not a whole arsenal of
power strips and extension cords to a dozen devices to provide power .
But we had not that green stuff in our time .
We had no automated gadgets needed to capture a satellite 2,000 miles away
in space, to contact others to find out where the nearest pizza place is located .
But isn't it very sad that the current generation complains about how
wasteful we ” older people ” were, simply because we did not
have that green stuff in that time ?????
