The Gambia has unique qualities over many other destinations . It is only six hours away from major European destinations , there is no jetlag , and it is a popular and affordable winter destination in search of sun,sea , sand and cultural experience . It is the smallest country on the African continental mainland and is bordered to the north , east , and south by Senegal , and has a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean in the west .
On 18 February 1965, The Gambia became independent.
